Professor Playtime's Christmas Shop of Wonders: Christmas Music!

I love Christmas music! It gets me in the holiday spirit and brings back so many wonderful memories from my childhood. In fact music is one of the first things many people think of when they think about Christmas. Because music is such an essential part of Christmas, we decided that Professor Playtime needed more music than the typical Elevate series.

We wanted to stick to the classic Christmas carols that so many of us grew up with, but there was a challenge that we faced. The melodies of most Christmas songs are difficult to sing, especially for kids. So we began a tightrope walking process of staying true to the original song while making the melody easier for kids to sing along to. We love how they turned out! This series includes Joy to the World, Deck the Halls, Angels We Have Heard on High, Jingle Bells, and Silent Night. Check out our version of Angels We Have Heard on High!

Harold is M.I.A!

Funny e-mail that crossed my desk the other day…

To All Who Care About Puppets (and even those of you who don’t):

Harold is missing, last resting place unknown. He is an important member of the Dirty Jacket Gang and the Allaso Ranch Jr. cast.

If you have any knowledge of his whereabouts please call his gang at (#). Picture attached – The purple one in the middle is Harold.

Please, help restore this sweet but clumsy puppet to his gang… they miss him.

Has Harold been lost? Kidnapped? Or worse yet…been sold, recycled and made into a quilt? Can the Dirty Jacket Gang make it without him? Does this signal an outbreak of crime towards all things little?

All serious questions that must be asked when you work in Children’s Ministry!!

Devotional: I’m Not Too Important To Help Others!

"If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important." Galatians 6:3 NLT

Something is important because of its purpose. No purpose? No importance. Think of a battery. It is small and not very flashy or attractive. But its purpose makes it important. You can’t use a mobile phone, channel surf with a remote control, see in the dark with a flashlight, or start your car without a battery. Batteries are important because their purpose is to make it possible for those devices to reach their potential.

We are designed by God and commanded by God to help others. Helping others is part of our purpose, and when we help others it is like plugging a fully charged battery into our life. Just like a mobile phone without a battery is a purposeless paper-weight, a person who does not help others is purposeless, just taking up space. You are not too important to help others; you find your importance and your purpose by helping others.

Watch for the chance to help someone this week. Try to find at least one person to help everyday. It might be a person you see in your regular routine, or a random person on the street. Remember, when you help them, you are fulfilling your purpose. Trust me…you’ll get a charge out of it.

“Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help.” Isaiah 58:7 NLT

“‘He gave justice and help to the poor and needy, and everything went well for him. Isn’t that what it means to know me?’ says the Lord.” Jeremiah 22:16  NLT

Devotional: I Will Accept Help From Others!

Read the story of Naaman and the search for a cure in 2 Kings 5.

"Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed." Ecclesiastes 4:9 NLT

“I can do it myself!” You hear it all around you. In the checkout lines. From kids in schoolyards and in playgrounds. Even in your own family. Maybe especially in your own family. But there is one place you might not notice it. In your own heart. We all still have that inner four-year-old hanging around and we want to do things ourselves. When someone asks, “Need help with that?” the four-year-old instinctively says, “No, thanks. I got it.” What we are really saying is, “I can do it myself.”

There are lots of reasons not to want help. We want the credit. We don’t want to explain how to do something. We don’t want to risk them messing it up. We don’t want to owe someone. The problem however is that when we keep saying, “I can do it myself” we end up BY OURSELVES.

We are not created to do life on our own. God designed us to help others and to need help from others. When we turn down help we are turning away from the possibilities that God might be opening up in our lives. Who knows if the person who offers to help you carry groceries to your car might be someone who would come to church if you asked?

If we follow the words of our inner four-year-old we’ll never find out the miracles God can do when we accept help from others. But if we open ourselves up to accept help, like Naaman did, amazing things can happen in our lives.

Listen carefully this week for times when others offer to help you. Then, don’t let yourself say, “No, thanks” or “I got it”. After all, those are just grown up versions of  “I can do it myself.”

“May he send you help from his sanctuary and strengthen you from Jerusalem.” Psalm 20:2 NLT

“If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble.” Ecclesiastes 4:10 NLT

"The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death." Proverbs 13:14 NLT
